THE RITE MENTORING PROGRAM

HOW IT WORKS

Rite Mentoring has chosen a unique, group mentoring model to reach more young people, leveraging the benefits of group work and the strengths of positive peer relationships. In partnership with local high schools, we place screened and trained adult mentors in school on a weekly basis to build mentoring relationships with a group of boys aged 14-17. The group size is usually 8-15. Our program length is negotiable but lasts at least a semester, and sometimes longer, providing time for the mentoring community to establish itself, develop trust and begin to thrive. A typical weekly session, facilitated by one of our staff (also a mentor) includes sport and games, healthy snacks, a structured topical discussion and opportunities for support.

TARGET GROUPS AND NEEDS

Schools select students with untapped potential who would benefit from the presence of positive male role models. We work with a range of students, some with a strong desire to be independent, while others lack self-confidence or positive peer relationships. Rather than defining boys by their behaviours, we seek to recognise their unmet needs and unique gifts by creating safe spaces for them to develop self-awareness, critical thinking skills and a clearer sense of purpose.

HOW WE ADD VALUE

We bridge the gap between what young men need and what schools and families with limited resources can provide. Having listened to young men share what’s important to them, we’ve designed safe spaces for them to talk and test ideas, ensuring spaces have just the right mix of energy and vulnerability. Having listened to what schools need, our program compliments respectful relationships and other pastoral initiatives in response to concerning behaviours, and extends the school’s wellbeing capacity. Our team’s social work and youth work quals ensure we work with young men in ways that are professional and safe, strengths-based, culturally sensitive, trauma-informed, welcoming and inclusive.

ADDITIONAL SUPPORT

Through our camping and one-to-one mentoring programs, we offer additional avenues of support and life education that can be bolted onto the mentoring program, subject to the needs of the school and the group.
